Discover the Beauty of Cataract Falls and Lieber SRA

There is something mesmerizing and beautiful about rushing water. Cataract Falls is one of Indiana’s most stunning natural sites. Here, you can also see a historic covered bridge, walk along peaceful trails, and visit Lieber SRA (State Recreation Area) for camping and water sports.

The falls and SRA are part of the Cagles Mill Lake area. Check out this link for a map and detailed description. https://www.in.gov/dnr/state-parks/files/cagles_mill_trail.pdf

Best Time to Visit Cataract Falls

Cataract Falls is large enough to be beautiful any time of year.

Like any waterfall, the flow will be most significant in the spring. However, it might be impossible to view the lower falls. Cagles Mill Lake was designed as a flood control reservoir and manages water flow during high rainfall or snowmelt. My visit in early April was a disappointing reminder of this, as the lower falls viewing area was off-limits due to the high water levels.

But hey, all was not lost, as the Upper Falls are the main attraction.

Full disclosure: most readers know I try to use my own photos on this blog. However, I had to rely on Shutterstock for this view because the lower falls area was inaccessible.

Fall color will make this site even more spectacular. If you time it right, the falls could be a frozen wonder during winter.

Upper Cataract Falls Viewing Area

You can enjoy the falls from the grassy area in front of the parking lot, or from the viewing platform.

The platform appears to be handicap accessible, but use caution! I noticed a small lip between the parking lot and the platform walk that could be difficult for a wheelchair.

Covered Bridge

After taking in the Upper Falls, walk over to the historic covered bridge. The bridge was built in 1875 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is accessible. Be sure to look through the window that overlooks the falls.

Cataract Falls SRA Trails

The Ed Dailey Nature Trail is a 0.5-mile loop connecting upper and lower falls.

After walking around for a bit, it seemed the most scenic route would be the Creekside Trail. Round trip, this was about 1.5 miles. The trailhead is just after the viewing platform.

There is a steep decline at the beginning of the trail. After that, it is not too difficult, but there are lots of tree roots and steep natural steps in certain areas.

Be sure to take in the views as you walk along Mill Creek.

On the way back, you can grab some nice pictures of the upper falls from a different aspect.

Lieber State Recreation Area

Once you have finished your tour of the falls, take a trip north to the Lieber SRA. In summer, this is a great place for water sports.

During my spring visit, the beach area and boat dock were flooded, but I was still able to enjoy the trails, views and camping.

Trails

The covered bridge nature trail has a stone surface and passes a small decorative covered bridge. It is rated as accessible, but even though it was an easy, pleasant woodland walk, the surface was way too rough for a wheelchair.

There is also a short stone path that leads out to an overlook of Cagles Mill Lake.

Lieber SRA Campground

The campground has both electric and non-electric sites. The setting is well-kept and nicely wooded, but the sites are fairly close together without much privacy. As my visit was in early spring, there were few close neighbors.

Final Thoughts

Whether you have an hour, a day, or a weekend, the Cagles Mill Lake area is an Indiana site worth visiting. You can find more information, plan travel routes, and make camping reservations here: https://www.in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/cagles-mill-lake-lieber-and-cataract-falls-sra/

If you have time, I highly recommend visiting the nearby Depauw Nature Park near Greencastle, IN. There are 10 miles of scenic hiking trails and majestic cliff views here.
